GRIT Origins: The Barrens

The blueberry barrens in GRIT are based on those in Orland, ME, the town beside Bucksport, where I lived while writing the book. These rocky fields truly deserve the name barren until August, when the harvesters appear, stripping the low bushes of berries with special long-tined rakes. As you can see, they already have some boxes out there, even though it’s only May!
